Mending

Today I am mending things
Holes in a jumper
A broken clasp on a friendship bracelet
The jagged space in my soul
Where I have chipped away
At any sense of peace

Today I am mending things
Clearing the beach of polystyrene
Clearing my house of stuff I don’t need
Rewiring my brain to make
New neural pathways
So the broken paths towards
Self-hatred and addiction
Are reforged towards joy

Today I am mending things
Make do and mend
They used to say
In World War Two
When the bombs fell
In a blitzkrieg of hatred
That still falls today

Today I am mending things
Mending myself
Becoming whole again
Like I was in the womb
Of my mother

Today I am mending things
Mending our Earth, our Mother
Who cries silent screams
At our apathy and greed

Today I am mending things
Are you mending things too?
